The Patty Shop is tucked away in a nondescript row of stores in Kitsilano. But, once you know about it – no matter where you are, you’re going to be making the trip to this store that sells these little pastry packages of deliciousness.

A Vancouver institution that has been a local favourite for many years, the Patty Shop is tucked away on Macdonald Street near King Edward, and most people can go their whole lives without even hearing about it. But, those in the know — know. This is a place that you would cross bridges to get to.

The shop is just a little shop, with a counter, a chalkboard menu, and a bell that you ring for service. Unless there is a line, the counter isn’t staffed so you’ll need to ring the bell. Someone will pop up from the back (where the magic happens) and you can order.

The price for the Jamaican Patties ranges from $2-3, or you can go for a frozen bag that is slightly cheaper.

The flavours include Mild/Hot Beef, Curry Beef, Vegetable, Spinach, and Chicken. They also sometimes have special patties that include pizza (think a much more delicious hot pocket), and taco.

The patties are ordered ready to eat and piping hot. Flaky crust, spicy, vegetarian-friendly, deliciousness.. There is no seating area, so you can either grab a seat on the curb, or head back to your car/bus stop.

“I’ll take you to the Patty shop, one taste of what they got, have you spending all you got” – 50 Cent

Really nice for lunch. Make sure you take cash though, there is no ATM within walking distance and they only take cash.

We moved from vancouver many yrs ago and have tried many Jamaican patties – not one of them compares to The Patty Shop. I wish I could buy them here in Scottsdale. I crave them as I write this.
