As we head into May, the weather is still nippy but the sun keeps trying its hardest to make it out to kick off spring! Here’s hoping we start moving into some warmer weather within the next few weeks… In any case, there are lots of fun things happening throughout the month including night markets, Cinco de Mayo, burlesque versions of scary IT clowns, and a whole lot more…

shipyards night market 2017

North Vancouver Shipyards Market

When: Every Friday night, starting May 5
Where: Lower Lonsdale, North Vancouver
What is it: The weekly summer night market on the North Shore with live music, a beer garden, (A LOT of) food, art, music… Dogs are allowed and you can by things like jewelry, clothing, baking, organic meats, and much more. (more info)

Casa de Amigos – Cinco de Mayo Celebration

When: Friday, May 5 – Saturday, May 6
Where: Robson Square, Downtown Vancouver
What is it: A Cinco de Mayo celebration featuring live entertainment, traditional folk dancers, Luchador Wrestlers, authentic cuisine and beverages. 19+ event, fully licensed. (more info)

The Empire Strikes Back: Burlesque Adventure

When: Friday, May 5 and Friday, May 26 – Saturday, May 27
Where: Rio Theatre (1660 East Broadway)
What is it: Ever wanted to see a sexy Darth Vader? Vancouver’s favourite ‘nerdlesque’ troupe, the Geekenders, return to East Van’s Rio Theatre with a revamped version of their smash hit take on The Star Wars Classic: The Empire Strikes Back. (more info)

Got Craft? Spring Edition

When: Saturday, May 6 – Sunday, May 7
Where: Maritime Labour Centre 1880 Triumph Street
What is it: Huge craft fair featuring jewelry, clothing, ceramics, stationery, housewares, plush toys, and more including food carts and hands-on workshops. (more info)

Teen Angst Night

When: Saturday, May 6
Where: Fox Cabaret (2321 Main Street)
What is it: A popular comedic reading series that’s been running since 2000. Readers can share anything (poetry, songs, letters, journals, diaries, essays, stories, plays, lists, etc), as long as they’re awkwardly hilarious! (more info)

Drunk Spelling Bee

When: Tuesday, May 9
Where: Q Shi Q Japanese BBQ
What is it: Its a spelling bee that is also a drinking game. If your team spells the word correctly, the room drinks. If you spell it incorrectly, only your team drinks. You collect points for words spelled correctly and the first team to 10 points wins a prize! (more info)

Trivia Night at the Vancouver Aquarium

When: Thursday, May 11
Where: Vancouver Aquarium
What is it: Give your random marine knowledge a porpoise and join the first-ever Trivia Night at our next adults-only After Hours at the Vancouver Aquarium. (more info)

We All Float Down Here: A Burlesque Tribute to Stephen King

When: Friday, May 12
Where: Rio Theatre (1660 East Broadway)
What is it: Following a sold out performance at the Rio theatre in March, Vancouver’s favourite ‘nerdlesque’ troupe return for an encore performance of their weirdest… and creepiest… show yet. (more info)

Spot Prawn Festival

When: Saturday, May 13
Where: False Creek Fishermen’s Wharf, 1505 West 1st Avenue
What is it: Each year at the Spot Prawn Festival, Chefs’ Table Society member chefs from across the Lower Mainland serve you fresh-from-the-boat spot prawns. (more info)

Ongoing: Abbotsford Tulip Festival

When: On until May 14, 2017
Where: Abbotsford
What is it: Spring is here and the tulips are in bloom. Pack a tasty picnic basket, or visit one of the convenient food trucks on-site and enjoy a fun filled day with family and friends. Your Instagram feed will thank you. (more info)

Art Battle Vancouver

When: Saturday, May 27
Where: Woodward’s Atrium (351 Abbott Street)
What is it: Doors at 10pm, 2 rounds of all-star 20 minute painters, all paintings up for silent auction! This is an event that you definitely don’t want to miss at Woodwards Atrium. (more info)
