The Thanksgiving weekend is one of the best times to let your belt buckle out, drink too much, argue with family, and thank whoever you choose that we have 8 long months until bathing suit season is back upon us. It’s a long weekend in Vancouver, so you know the weather is not going to cooperate, luckily there are a host of other fun activities and events going on around town that are under cover.

Abracadaver Cabaret

When: Friday, October 9 from 8pm – midnight
Where: The Wise Hall (1882 Adanac Street)
What is it: This annual event showcases magicians, dancers, actors, poets, visual artists and circus performers, all working within a dark framework suitable for the invocation of fall. $20 (more info)

The Lady Show

When: Friday, October 9th at 8pm
Where: Little Mountain Gallery (195 East 26th Street)
What is it: Ladies, ladies, and more ladies! Really funny ladies of comedy performing sketches, stand-up, monologues, theatre-y business, nonsense and a whole lot more. Dudes are very much welcome. $10 (more info)

Vancouverite: A Comedy Show

When: Friday, October 9th at 8pm
Where: Hot Art Wet City Gallery (2206 Main Street)
What is it: A comedy show featuring funny stories about what adjusting to Vancouver has been like, from some of the best Vancouver comedians including James Kennedy, Marlene Swidzinski, Jonny Paul, Jacob Samuel, Kevin Banner and Jane Stanton. $10 (more info)

Vancouver International Improv Festival

When: Friday, October 9th – Saturday, October 10th
Where: 3 locations on Granville Island
What is it: Some of the world’s best improvisers will be in Vancouver to showcase some mind-expanding and mind-blowing comedy. A diverse array of talent and comedy, these shows are unexpected and hilarious. $20 gets you an evening pass to see two shows. (more info)

Harvest Haus Oktoberfest

When: October 9, 10, 11
Where: Queen Elizabeth Plaza
What is it: A new Oktoberfest experience in Vancouver that’s full of drinking, pretzels, and girls and guys in traditional German outfits. Tickets are selling out fast but there are still some available. Tickets include a four hour Oktoberfest-inspired seating with access to food, beer, music, and more. $25-40 (more info)

Fright Nights at Playland

When: Friday, October 9th – Sunday, October 11
Where: Playland at East Hastings and Windermere St.
What is it: This year, Fright Nights has 7 haunted houses, 15 rides, performers, and professional scarers walking around the park hoping to make your nightmares come true. $25-30 (more info)

What is it: It may be Thanksgiving but it’s still a long weekend and Kitty Nights Burlesque is celebrating it in proper fashion with OCTOBURLESQUE! A night of burlesque fun and games (including a Gravy Drinking Contest!), fabulous prizes and of course a sexy dance party! $9 (more info)

When: Sunday, October 11th at 10:15pm
Where: Rio Theatre (1660 East Broadway)
What is it: A screening of the most notoriously pleasurable cult-movie experiences with a live shadow cast featuring the Geekenders burlesque troupe, prop bags, and lots of dancing. Advanced tickets are sold out, but tickets will be available at the door starting at 5:30pm. $12 (more info)

Where: Base of Blackcomb Mountain
What is it: If you’re looking for new snowboard/ski equipment for the upcoming winter season, the Whistler Blackcomb Turkey Sale is one of the best places to stock up. Specifically if you are addicted to buying jackets and seem to have to buy a new one every damn year. Guilty. Free entry. (more info)

Turkey Trot

When: Monday, October 12th at 8:30am
Where: Granville Island and around the Seawall
What is it: A good way to get some good exercise before the eating begins on Thanksgiving Day. The 10km run is a fun one that goes around the Seawall and ends up back at Granville Island for a post-run celebration. $55 (more info)

Thanksgiving Dinner

If you’re not going to a family dinner but you’re still craving a turkey dinner, there are a few options around town, including:

  • 3rd Annual Thanksgiving Dinner at Graze Vegetarian Restaurant (no turkeys were harmed in the making of this dinner) $35 – more info
  • Thanksgiving Long Table Series located at the Irish Heather, this $18 meal is a great option for meeting new people in town on a really long table – more info
  • Orphan Thanksgiving Party at Nomad Restaurant on Main Street with meat & vegetarian meals as well as drink specials and live music. – more info
