The West Vancouver Yacht Club (WVYC) is excited to welcome back the Southern Straits Regatta after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 52nd running of the Easter distance race will see sailors crisscrossing Georgia Strait testing their strategy, skill, and endurance while racing overnight in early season conditions.
This year, the Royal Canadian Navy will be in attendance and starting the race on its Patrol Craft Training (PCT) Cougar 61 Orca-class vessel.
The Short, Medium, and Long courses range from 70-145 nautical miles. There is also an Inshore Course (approximately 20 nautical miles) that will be conducted during daylight hours on Good Friday.
In addition to the on-water activity, there will be family and community activities taking place near the start line at Dundarave Pier. The community is invited to begin their long weekend with a pancake breakfast benefiting the Lions Society, with live music from the West Vancouver Pops Band. There will also be live commentary about participating boats as well as a special visit from the Easter Bunny.
For those who want to follow the boats over the multiday race, live yacht tracking will be available at: www.southernstraits.ca.
