Karma yoga in Vancouver

Yoga is not known to be a cheap activity, unless you have the self-discipline to do those YouTube videos every day. Most of the time if you’re going to a class you could be paying $10-20 just for an hour of stretching.

Luckily, there are a few places in Vancouver that offer free yoga (also known as “karma yoga”), a practice of teaching classes by donation. So where can you find these free yoga classes in Vancouver? Here are a few ideas:

Karma Teachers

Located in a small studio in Gastown, Karma Teachers offers free or by donation yoga and meditation classes. They are also home to Canada’s only federally registered Non-Profit Yoga Teacher Training! “If someone can’t pay, we ask them to just smile at everyone for the rest of the day. Pay it forward, show people how yoga is changing your life by smiling.”

Location: 45 West Hastings, Downtown Vancouver
Classes: 8-10 classes a day, including Yin, Hatha, Power, Ecstatic, and more.

Unity Yoga Karma Classes

Unity Yoga Tea House, located on Commercial Drive offers classes for $17 drop-in, but also host weekly Karma Classes that only require you to bring a non-perishable donation for the Vancouver Food Bank. These classes are taught by the newest members of their teaching community, so it’s a great experience for all.

By Donation Hot Yoga

If you’re addicted to hot yoga and just can’t settle for regular karma classes, Modo Yoga (with multiple locations in Vancouver) offers hot yoga by donation. To attend these classes, you only need your donation that will go to the charity of the month. This is a very popular class, and gets very busy. So arrive early! The weekly classes are typically held on Friday night from 9:00pm

UBC Yoga Club

The UBC Yoga Club offers classes to members that aren’t free but only cost $2 a session. Membership fees are very reasonable and only cost $20 for students, and $35 for the general public. Classes are held daily in the Student Union Building and include Power, Hatha, and Yin yoga.

Rooftop Yoga

Rooftop Yoga is an intimate, donation-based studio located in the heart of Downtown Vancouver. It is a peaceful rooftop studio with wrap around windows that allows students to enjoy a panoramic view of the cityscape. Classes are by donation and include Vinyasa and Candlelight Yin.

Yaletown Roundhouse Karma Yoga

The Yaletown Roundhouse Community Centre offers karma yoga for $10/drop-n classes on Saturday and Sunday mornings. These classes are drop-in only and is a smooth, flowing class of Vinyasa yoga.
